03/02/20: Chapter 5: Shopping/ Social Order

When going shopping although it is mostly seemed as leisure I can see how for the most part we go with a certain style in our head and this style is based off what interested us in the beginning typically depending on what we seen usually through the media. Social media now has a huge impact considering that is usually were we get our first exposure to the things that interest us because of the platform the media has they are able to show styles with a certain clothing style, hand bag or hairstyle and helps us base our decision from there. I can see how even me myself go shopping as kind of a self healing how they gave the example in the book about it gives us a greater sense of community and creativity I noticed that when I started to buy vintage clothes I became so interested in it and started to belong to the community and are able to talk with others in a sort of slang but they tend to actually understand me . As the community started to transform this also had to change exactly what department stores needed to offer to keep up to par with the consumers demands this is when many department stores started to incorporate higher class stores because the consumers started to want that incorporated. Depending on basically the phase that society is in depends on what stores remain high in business, for example Victoria Secret Pink was in such popularity when I was in high school it was the cool brand and then now that I am in college I hear many stores are closing. I started to think the trend fell it had a peak moment and then died off for the most part they stay in business for being well known for women intimate clothings but its crazy that once a store that was so packed and so high in sales was worrying about sales blew my mind. The turn society took was more into Forever 21 and not so name brands but actual style not just a sweat suit that said Pink and if I took a step back I could actually realize that. Now although I do see a lot of upscale emulation as in wanting to be flashy and all of that although in reality it is not in there scope of income this where it tends to have people go from having so much money in savings to then going into debt because they are trying to fit in with a certain trend and they want the people around them to look up to the possessions that they have . This also mixed with new consumerism because this why many department malls started to having to incorporate more ritzy name brands in order to help the consumers demands of wanting that luxurious living style. The collective conscience that Durkheim gave was absolutely in fact true and that we tend to follow certain actions and make that our behavior depending on the external . The stores took advantage of this considering the fact that they were actually able to they seen that by bringing in huge groups it creates a huge part of feeling part of the community similar to me starting to buy vintage clothes . For example a phone we tend to pay so much money every year to upgrade and the whole time the upgrade is not even necessary but we see it as if it is a necessity. With shopping and the collecting of goods this is when we tend to accumulate so much clothes that are a necessity but rather a want and we tend to hoard and I know that I am one of those people when I look in my room I see an over abundance of clothes and shoes to choose out of . But when I think deeper the hoarding and me not being able to let go of my clothes is simply because I think back when I had nothing and the sense of me letting go of stuff and me emotions tied to the clothes make it so hard for me to let go .

02/26/20: Role Conflict in Real Life

The other day I was taking care of my aunt who can not be left home alone and also was babysitting my cousin that was spending the night at my house. I received a call from my friend that was in need of my help it was 1 in the morning and he was in a whole different city but needed a ride. Me being his friend felt the need that I should go get him because of the circumstances of it being 1 in the morning and crazies can be outside but at the same time Im playing the role of a babysitter and also watching my aunt who can not be home alone due to illness. I sat back and realized this is a perfect example of role conflict in my life because the roles that I play the all clashed into each other which made me realize I can’t do all of them all the same time considering I can’t be two places at the same time . So at the end of if I had to stay home and tried my best of being a good friend and turning to uber but that failed as well and I realized I can’t satisfy everyone because I’m just one person even though I have plenty of roles in the end I can’t play all of them at one.

02/22/20 Mandatory Blog Post: Role Strain and Role Conflict in Life

I run into both role strain and role conflict in life everyday in my life . My role strain would have to be being a full time student of course I am obligated with certain duties with that one role. I am expected to attend all of my 5 classes on a regular basis and be awake in class to follow along and take notes and comprehend everything my professors points they are trying to get across. I need to be ready and willing to participate in class so that would consist of me making sure all of my homework is done and all the reading is done that is necessary and also do papers if need to be. I need to be able to set aside at least 2 hrs from each class depending on which class it is for class work / reading alone. On top of this I am also to ready for when mid terms and finals come around to be ready so this would consist of extra amounts of studying and going over material and notes this alone already is a lot . Role Conflict comes in to play when the role of me being a full time student clashes with me being a daughter, aunt, sales associate, care giver to my grandma , babysitter and countless other roles that I fall into on the way. My mom tells me to set aside time for her because I never go and see her , being an aunt I feel obligated to have to see my niece at-least three times a week because she is at that age where every time I feel like I see her she is growing or saying more stuff . Being a care giver to my grandma so making sure she is all good and make sure she is taken care of with all of her drs appointments and medications and a babysitter to make sure I get them from school and to school on time almost everyday while me also getting ready for school myself . This all has to work around the fact that I take 5 classes 4 days a week and also work so I have to make sure I have enough time to make this all fit into a week and every week it changes because my work schedule is never the same so my routine must change every week so this is where all the roles that I do all conflict with each other and the is why I rely on my planner to somehow get me through life .

02/22/20 Handling the Stigma of Handling the Dead

The stigma of handling the dead to me I honestly never put a whole lot of thought into I always said it was a job that I could never do because the thought of dealing with dead bodies all day long does not seem like my ideal job. I never thought of it as someone was making money really of the handling of a dead body I always thought it was crazy we pay so much money for a casket to just be put into the floor and so many people spend so much into and they set their life onto a path road of even picking out the casket they want to be put in and where they want to be buried instead of just living life while they can. I do notice that many people have a somewhat sense of fear of using the word dead I know I do I can take the word loss but dead to me is such a straight forward word and not everyone is ready to hear the finalization of that word and the toll it takes to me personally. The role of someone who handling the funeral to me is such a job that changes of course depending on the family you are dealing with some families might want someone who is involved and then there can be other families who have somewhat a sense of a line that they don’t want the person to cross which can be tricky depending on what exactly family they are dealing with. I can see where humor can detach them from their work because the work they are doing has to be somewhat tricky especially considering you’re seeing it everyday of your life you somewhat need to have a detachment in order to make it through. Many look at the directors as they are cold people because its hard having to carry the idea they deal with death everyday but it reality they have to and its sad because they do have emotions and they do realize what they are doing they have to in order to continue this business but is a sticky situation of having that job. Its crazy to look at the example of the man who makes a good amount of money from this business and has a net worth of 250,000$ but constantly has to live on toes because of the stigma and the looks he might get because of his job occupation and then the money he gets to spend from it. I never payed much sense but I can’t be mad at someone for making money from doing this because it is much more than I could do just the thought of it is beyond me.

02/22/20 The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life

As everyday goes by us as individuals take on the thought of how other perceive us and that consumes majority of our day . We take so much importance of how others will look at us or how others will think that is why Shakespeare quote is so important and relevant because we enter a day but we are all players in the grand scheme of things we have the moments that sometimes a part of our self will come out and then it will exit and another will come into play. This is where it is mixed with how exactly we have different selves depending on what exactly the situation is. We have the conflict of trying to achieve this sort of ideal expression of ourselves because we don’t go off our true self on how we want to express but rather follow what we think others want to see in us. For example if something happens and everyone cries we assume that we need to cry because if we don’t cry people will look at us as if we are weird because we are not crying while everyone else is but in reality this is us trying to play the role that we feel in that point of time is necessary this is similar to a veneer of consensus because the act of crying would be deemed acceptable. We rely on the appearance that we present to base majority of our paths and we want to be accepted the way that we put forth so we spend so much time trying to do that we lose majority of our true self identity too and we lose the whole idea of a self identity.

02/22/20 Appendix: Advertising/Research methods

When conducting the research the main question is what/ why are you gathering this data and how will it be interpreted. For example in class we talked about our level of education while gathering that research it can be somewhat tricky because even if we numbered all of the choices there can be a lot of choices especially depending on the group the we are talking to for example are we using Americas education system basis or are we using a different countries. This is why while researching you can run into many different situations and this is why data is not always reliable because without annoying the person who is taking this survey or getting samples for a research they don’t want to have to deal with a bunch of different question with answers that are too in to detail and to time consuming. While trying to understand what type of research that you need to do that gives you the best results you also then run into the social area that you are in and how this can be effected as well considering if you are asking a question in a diverse area you are going to be getting all types of different answers and that is why there is really no ” ideal, correct” answer because depending on the person it can make total sense . That is why not all research is measurable because there is not enough choices exactly for all people to choose from. So this is where focus groups can be beneficial because this is easier for people to be more honest and open with a more intimate setting but there is always room for people to be scared or kind of change their honesty in the research and that can hinder the results . That is why there are so many different types of research methods to turn to especially depending on what the research is pertaining to for the best utilization of the turn out and that is if this day and age people actually will be willing to be part of a research at all.

02/22/20: Branding/The Self and Social Interaction

When I think of myself I do associate with most of the stuff that I grab are usually more hyped brands. In the example of a “Windows vs Mac Guy” I can totally relate to this considering the fact I remember always associating windows with like a more office type of guy I couldn’t picture my 19 year old self with a windows computer. In eight grade I remember always saying I never wanted a Samsung or any other phone I only wanted an apple and when I look back it is because all of my friends had it and it was the “cool” phone. I can see that the way us as a society consume all of the ideas of others and everyone trying to fit in there really is no type of individuality because we are all moving as a culture to be on the latest and greatest and not realizing that everyone else is doing the same exact thing. Lately I have noticed though most of the things that we wear now or try to particularly put us in a certain type of group for example they said wearing lulu lemons they are showing off their body or have interest in fitness . Many people even myself grab for stuff that I don’t even associate myself with like for example I wear Lululemon’s but I don’t exactly have interest for fitness but I still wear them and when I look at my wardrobe I see that much of what I wear I don’t exactly feel associated with. I wear vintage clothes but the whole time not aware of the bands that I am even representing. The point of saying that we all have different selves is true because depending on who or what we are by shapes the type of self we will put forth for example a child at school with friends is different then being a child at home with their parents because the surrounding is different and they try and act better of course with their parents rather than their friends. Many people try to associate themselves with a culture that they want to fit into and make a mold into their sense of self that really isn’t them for example when you grow up with your parents and their religion its like they mold you to carouse follow on in that religion and sometimes the child does and sometimes the child doesn’t but they are cultured to try and fit in. Everything in our everyday is branded and its crazy how much these effect our daily living I always sat back and thought I pay all this money for a car and I am a driving advertisement and that’s crazy to me but it’s reality and it’s life we all do it.

02/19/20: Would you hire an Ex-Convict ?

When it comes to ex convicts the main issue that many people tend to turn to is the ” race” part of the criminal justice system which makes the whole system unjust. Also when you look at ex convicts you tend to look at why exactly did they go to jail because that can also add pressure on whether or not someone will hire them or not and can be involved in the decision making. This researcher noticed that when it came to the people with criminal records they had to in a sense work harder so for example they had to provide more information and clarity on whether or not what exactly their past was about . They also even had one person take a 45 minute test to base the level of knowledge in a particular area that they had. In some instances so of the people who were hiring said they prefer to hire ex convicts because they have more discipline and are also more motivated and some were not willing to really see them on the same level as someone else who was applying. When it came to race on the other hand it reflected that race still was a huge factor with many of these considering that Blacks were 24% less likely to get a job compared to a White person. After this research was done the conclusion of this discussion being made was that there are many limits on employment opportunities when having a criminal record and that it creates a major barrier with the employment of them. The race inequality also adds fuel to this fire because they bother intertwine and create an issue as well and they both can lead to less opportunities for success.

02/19/20: Doing Sociological Research

When doing sociological research sociologist when they turn to studying have to focus on exactly what they want to figure out so they tend to look at interactions and to see how society basically works together. So when it comes to interactions there can be symbolic interactions which would involve a human and then based off that ones self can determine how exactly they might interact with another and a sociologist would look on the our perspective and try to dive in and see why someone interacted with someone in such a way that they did. So for example when we went over in class when we said if someone sat next to us while there was a whole room full of empty seats we would usually interact with our guard being up or lets say we got nervous or scared a sociologist would want to do research on why do we feel that way and also nature and nurture could also have a play in this lets say if in the past people usually don’t sit next to me then that would be something different for me and a sociologist would then be able to make that connection.Functionalism also comes into play and they see things from a step to step type of function considering all types of pieces come all together in order to function . The main argument against this is that society is to corrupt and that there was no function because the parts in society don’t actually connect at all and function together and it does not all smoothly run all together. When research is being conducted a researcher will select a topic and then pick a corresponding problem , then gather literature and formulate a hypothesis and then pick a type of research method then they choose the way they want to gather there research . This is when they turn to surveys, documents, experiments etc. they analyze the results then share them and based off that research can give more ideas for researches to conduct more research on a certain topic. The type of research method also all depends on what kind of answers they might need how efficient and the money as well especially because it is so hard to get people to take surveys now.

02/12/20: Coffee Shop Ethnography

For this coffee shop ethnography, I picked a coffeeshop located in Stockton, CA. This was my first time coming to this shop so I didn’t know exactly what to expect so as I walked in I could smell the coffee and also hear how loud the people behind the counter were through my air pods. As I walked up to the counter I had about three people come in right behind me and all were greeted with we will be right with you. The environment was very open I could hear what regulars must be telling them that it’s slow at the moment considering yesterday there was an event that causes a lot of traffic of people to come in. Charlie walked in that was with delivery and right when he walked in he was not only greeted but the person who was making the coffee kept a conversation and questioned exactly how long he had been doing delivery and if he was from here and really felt like an open environment. I did observe that the person making the coffee which would be the barista was by far the most upbeat and welcoming the cashier themselves was kind of just regular not super up beat. The age of the customers I see coming in and out all honestly depends I saw customers who were in their 20’s and I even saw a big wave of 30-50-year-old age range but they all come in and get a different vibe. A man in their 50s came and started to have a conversation with the workers that seemed to be about a meeting of importance and when a 20-year-old woman came in they started to have a conversation about a viral video about some girl who fell off stripper pole and still danced when she landed after she broke her jaw. I realized how different the vibes were depending on what customer walked in and he was so open to invite her to a house party that he going to be having. The race where pretty mixed and because there is so much going on in such a small place people can kind of be in their own way of being hidden. The man sitting next to me was maybe in his early 30s and he was there with a backpack and stack of paper he did seem to get kind of annoyed with how loud sometimes they were being although he had air pods in. The social factors of this coffee shop are the whole reason I strategically planned to go here because I assumed before what exactly to expect but I was wrong the environment was much more open then I originally thought. I observed one man named joe when he walked I he looked around and was greeted and he said hello he stood in line for about five minutes and I was trying to determine whether or not this man was a regular or a newbie like me I watched his interaction with the cashier and it was very generic not to upbeat. He played with cash and the remaining change he threw in the tip jar he then wandered to an area where pictures are up and he seemed to stand and actually observe them we made eye contact and he then looked outside then sat down. He sat right next to the door and whenever he heard the door opening his head went up very fast from his phone. During the time his coffee was being mad eye didn’t conversate with anyone bur rather sat with his head down at his phone the whole time. The Batista then alerted him that the milk he wanted they ran out of and he was addressed by his first name and also the nickname of “bud” I then thought maybe he was a regular. He did seem to chitter chat when he picked up his coffee he smiled and grabbed a straw and added something at the sugar and creamer area and he left. This environment seemed to be very open and comfortable they knew many of their regulars even to the extent someone left something behind and they knew phone numbers and also the names of majority of their customers because the clientele for the most part seems very routine. For the most part strangers don’t talk to each other, No one came up to me to speak although for once I sat without being on my phone or having earphones which is very different for me. The moods of the customers sitting all varied some seemed to be in depth conversations and some others where totally isolated. This experience was very eye opening to me without my air pods in I actually seemed Intune with the people around me instead of being totally isolated and not wanting to be bothered. The more I raised my head up from my computer the more people who would make eye contact with me and smile. I saw how different everything could be when you are consciously aware. I happened to turn to my shoulder before I began to wrap up and I saw that the two customers sitting down by me although they were at separate tables and very in-depth with the work they were doing leaned over to talk to each other and it shocked me because it’s crazy how it looks, they know each other but didn’t talk the whole time I’ve sat there. But then I realized I do this almost everywhere I go with a friend we. Might both be with each other but to others they might not even know considering we don’t talk but rather so occupied with other things.
