Fast food work has brought along a lot of jobs for many people especially younger people. When we look back at the agriculture time period we see that obviously fast food places were unnecessary but now we live in such fast paced society that many people turn and lean on these places. We need coffee in the morning instead of making it at home just stop at starbucks on your way to work. We had no time to make dinner lets just stop and then we pick up a pizza for dinner and call it a night. These jobs are good beginning jobs because it does help many people able to get onto their feet but in the long run the labor work is hard to balance with being able to have a living wage as well. Society has created such a good base for these companies because we lean on them all the time and give them the business they need to prosper. But now we see how technology has swept into the fast food jobs again when you go in some fats food chains a person doesn’t even take your order but rather you go infant of a big screen and pick what you want then pay there and don’t even have to communicate with a person at all and we see where alienation can be part of this .
03/10/20: Required Entry: Shopping for “we-ness”
I remember in high school everyone had Sanuks and I felt that I needed to own some in order to fit in. This conveyed me being part of high school I felt like all the cool kids at my school were wearing them and I felt that in order for me to fit in I had to buy some so I remember making my brother take me to the mall and I remember he was telling me to put the back of the shoe up and I remember telling him no one wore them like that . So not only did I buy the shoe to fit in but I also bought and wore it just like everyone else did so I could fit in and be part of the cool kids. The purchase satisfied me at the time considering me an my friend would match our saunas and wear them a certain way but now when I look back it’s crazy I did all that literally just to fit in and have a sense of belonging which is silly but being that young I didn’t even really realize until now when I look back.
03/10/20: Mandatory Blog Post: 10 Items and where they came from
Teddy bear dog toy – China
Baby teething toy – China
Heatable blanket – China
Apple Watch – China
Calculator- China
Nike Shoes – Vietnam
Jordan Shoes – China
Costco Socks – Mexico
Stussy Shirt – China
Eucerin Lotion – Mexico
These products where made else where because of how much labor differs in different countries. We live in a society where profit is always wanting to be made and we know that when you are getting products form other countries it usually benefits the person who is earning money off this product. This I know will impact my future considering so many jobs are being replaced by robots and machines when we went over the can industry I remember my grandma working at one and was able to live very comfortably with three kids. Now I never hear of anyone working at a cannery and rarely do you obtain a comfortable living with no college degree at all. She wasn’t even born in the United States and still she was able to live comfortably So many products are known to be made in China and if we do see something made form the United States it brings us great shock and that is because it is so rare. We look at designer brands and them being made from places like England and London those catch our attention but spending 1,000$ on a bag that was made in China wouldn’t fantasize us considering almost everything is. Work in the future will dwindle down like it already has and with machines on the rise things will be made elsewhere but not from people but rather jobs that run off machines that give no body employment because they want the most profit that they can receive and also in a fast manner and machines are able to give them just that. Majority of the products being made elsewhere doesn’t surprise me because I know that majority of things are not made in this country all due to profits and also many laws there are in place and big companies do not even want to deal with it so they simply don’t and move this business elsewhere.
03/10/20: Required Entry: Fight for $15
I think many people are realizing that the work they do for the money the make is by far less. This comes with the deffiniton of profit and many people can now realize that big companies are getting profit off of an individuals work they put forth. $15 an hr while working fast-food is a big leap considering when we look at the states minimum wage and also federal they both are very different, depending on the state which whom the person might work in determines how difficult a 15$ wage being met will be. This also clashes with how much technology is on the rise and not only will companies see profit being lost but they will also see that they might be better off investing in machinery to take the place of workers. Therefore we would have no type of individuality among fats food chains but rather a more robotic society. I feel that big companies will not exactly be scared of these workers unionizing considering these companies know how much power and money they have over their workers. They know that their employees people depend on the money that these jobs give them is what pays their bills and too many people fear of being homeless and without a job they wouldn’t risk it. We look back years ago when agriculture was before industrialization and people then would’ve fought for things but now we are in such a robotic and systematic way of society that there is not much of individuality at all therefore workers can ask for more money but in reality they don’t have no control and the companies of these fast food chains know that.
03/10/20: Required Entry: Corporate Ideologies
A corporate brand that I would connect with I guess would be Starbucks I choose this because of the meaningfulness of how important it is and impactful to the lives around me. This corporation would be a culture pedagogue because it teaches people in a sense of how big the coffee industry is . Millions of people wake up and the first thing they want to grab is coffee because that is what they have convinced themselves is what makes them ready for the day and actually wake up. Consumption habits is huge when it comes to caffeine and coffee , for example I have a coworker who literally functions off coffee and if she doesn’t have her daily dose of coffee she is literally not fully there now I don’t know if that is what really it is or if her body just reacts that way because it is so used to having coffee. She goes to Starbucks and they know her order by heart and they welcome her why is this? simply because she is a regular customer she is continuously there and she needs her fix. Starbucks is known by having a green straw and in many cases to me is like a group like to fit in , in high school I remember how big it was to have that green straw on campus it was like you were the cool kid and you had starbucks basically grouped you into a certain identity. These messages can be ideological in a sense because the money that you give to this company rather when people look at you they don’t see someone who’s bought coffee but rather they have a green straw therefore the probably spend about 5$ on that cup of coffee those 5$ then adds up to have more people look at you in maybe a political sense of oh they can afford a 5$ cup of coffee everyday therefore they have money. This corporation is known to be ran by people in college and therefore many of the consumers are college students or people who are already in the working field because this is what starts their day. With this in mind you see that they way Starbucks treats their employees are with scholarships and they based that with what consumers need and also the employees. Starbucks now has made such a big hegemony among so many social groups because it puts you in a certain group itself and starbucks basically dominates the whole coffee industry in a sense when we think coffee we think starbucks especially because they are literally everywhere we turn and this is why companies like Empresso and Poppys Coffee are not always the first thing we think of when we think of coffee.
03/10/20: Wishard, Caught between the ages
When Marx was developing the research of trying to see how the world shifted in such a way that shifted from Agriculture to Industrialization he was able to see a lot of change that happened in society. While I have lived my whole life in the Industrialization period I can hear about the different period but its crazy for me to comprehend that there was an actual time that people actually lived off growing there own things and basically working for themselves. Now with the change that occurred there is so much variety of selves considering like in class we look around and no one is wearing the same thing as one another and this shows how there is such a big difference with how the world was before in previous times. Now with there being more separation different ideas started to develop you started to see other people develop bigger goals rather than just thinking inside the box in which they were used to . For example it was seen rather than working for themselves they had to help a bigger company and although this bigger company was walking away with way more money it just happened to be like that and that is the way that society is set up. This made os many lose their identity we live in such a robotic society that like we discussed in class it is like a screw and at 40 years old we can have a wake up call and realized all that we had been doing was twisting this screw into the same thing and really not pushing us to get anywhere. Among nations we see how social class clashes with how different things are because there is a certain top 1% that reaches the part of succeeding and we live by the saying that we can get that high as long as we work hard enough and basically if we don’t its because we didn’t work hard enough is crazy. Technology is developing and this is what is going to take over very soon humans are able to do a lot but with us working there comes paying wages and if we invest in a robot in the long run we would be saving money although it is getting rid of many people being employed. As everything else in developing many of humans being needed is decreasing we live in such a sad time but also very fast moving where we look back 20 years ago and we can see cell phones were not of buzz now everyone has one it shows just how fast everything is moving and how many people are getting knocked out of jobs in the way of it.
03/10/20: Leidner, Over the Counter at McDoanld’s
When we look at fast food industries we see how everything is so uniformed and in a certain form in order to remain everything be efficient. When it comes to businesses the way that the function is not the same way that jobs functioned years ago. The purpose of having more people than machines kept everything in more of a uniformed profession but there was still individuality in every person that worked there. McDonalds for example has a wide variety of employees that are such a young age because that is usually where the new beginning workers start to work at and the get used to having to be controlled by the consumers demands and that is what shapes them. McDonalds even offers a Hamburger University and that is specialized off the job that people are employed to this is the same as when you work at. job and you might get a stock to invest in. Lets say for example Starbucks they encourage you workers considering they put forth college scholarships and in the scheme of things people that get employed there actually seem to think this is a huge benefit but when we look back in the past we see that benefits have gotten so low and that people used to not even work for these big companies and were able to still pay bills now people of middle and lower class keep struggling to make ends meet. Although there is not so much of a robot type of system considering the workers still get to interact but when we look at the future we can see that jobs like this are going to start dwindling down and less individuality among jobs. These jobs though people don’t look forward to because like we discussed in class this is just a job and we don’t get excited for it because e are so alienated from the job itself that is disconnects our self from the job itself and doesn’t exactly let our emotions get involved like the man building the chair example.
03/09/20: Ehrenreich, Nickeled and Dimed
With living with social class no one will really be on the same financial level and there will always be an imbalance. The way that the world is set up is already set for there to be imbalances and for their to be some more wealthy people than others. This reading validates just that so much of nicety is set up for the porter to not exactly succeed and have many things in place that hinder the success of many. For example the whole having to secure rent for two months for some lower class people that is usually a struggle but depending on their social class they might not even actually give them a chance in the long run. Many of the jobs though that people were willing to actually work hard for now though run into the issue that many of these jobs are being replaced. In class we discussed how although you just had you High School Diploma there was still plenty of way that people were able to get ahead in life and receive benefits but now it seems like if you don’t have an Associates degree which is almost now on the same level as a high school diploma it is much harder to succeed at all.
03/02/20: Conformity example: Heavens Gate
After doing the reading of more the ” If Hitler asked you..” I noticed big comparisons with the conformity example in Heavens Gate. Heavens gate was a cult and was able to convince many people to follow his way of thinking similar to a religion and took perfectly regular people into a state of mind that totally was taken over and be able to actually really disassociate themselves from their facility and put full belief into the fact they believed that if they were to die they would then follow in a spacecraft. They conformed and the group all stuck together because they were all able to believe in it and actually seen this as a reality and they had an authoritative leader by the name of Marshall Applewhite . In 2020 I look back and think how could people actually believe that but I know with conformity such things like this happen . So even in 2020 things like this can even happen and lead to all of these people committing suicide to get to a different state and actually put belief into it.
03/02/20: If Hitler asked you…
The experiment that was conducted that was based off the study that Miligram showed us a certain reality that is in our society. This study was able to give us many insight with so many things that happen and how they have a mix with The social construction of reality and that we believe things are real because we all agree they are real. So when we look back at Hitler we remember how so many people were able to get constructed and actually listened to these things basically be so naive. We now look back and think how could such people allow this and actually thing that this was right and this led to the study because the thought Americans obviously know this is ludicrous maybe its deeper and that its part of the German culture to follow this . This study wanted to see if that if he could show that germans are more obedient than Americans so he was going to incorporate different conditions to see if that is true. This is when the Teacher Learner process was conducted and they were to see the effects of punishment on learning and this is when they had one teacher and one learner . The learner knew that they were part of an experiment after but the teacher didn’t so they were said to get a reward from participating in the study whether it was extra credit or just $5. The teacher would have to shock the learner if they got an answer wrong and the teacher tested the shock as well so they knew how it felt. Although after this they had to then shock the learner so they conducted the experiment and when they shocked the learner they could hear them scream and the volts . This is when the teacher started to having to give volts that were deadly and the teacher still did it with knowing someone was getting hurt on the other end up but that didn’t stop them this is where they realized that many people would go all the way even just for a little money or extra credit. Obedience ran in all of this and with an authoritative figure it also gave more results of people actually listening and the people can’t liberate themselves and instead locked into a structure and we don’t have skills to disengage ourselves. The experiment gave insight and corresponded with a lot of just real life examples with obedience to authoritative figures.
