04/18/20: Chapter 7 : Toys/Gender

When it comes to toys gender is a vital factor when it comes to children many parents choose to think of what color to paint there Childs room whether it be pink or blue. Prior to birth you are already socialized into a box of a gender and whatever gender you are born with we are socially constructed to put you in it. Toys are the same we look at a car we assume a boy we look at a doll we assume a girl because that is our gender norm. This clashes with gender identity because of how society has turned as a whole we now do not get based off the gender we were born with but rather what gender we feel that we are . This statement arrises many arguments considering not everyone agrees with that just as many do not agree pink belongs to women and blue belongs to men. With transgenders evolving we have to now question our daily sociology expectations we have not look at the outside of someone and assume there gender but rather be gender fluid because although someone can look like a man then can feel that they are a women. Agents of socialization is what shaped our society today before I was born when I was seen on a sonogram I was automatically put into the pink category considering I had a vagina and not a penis. That simple explanation is what gets many people mad because they do not see the part that I was born with as my “gender” . Gender has evolved into so much in the past century rights have came and many more arguments on why there shouldn’t be gender roles and more equality. We look back yers ago and women had no rights now women have rights but that wasn’t enough to make people happy because now they want us to be equal all the way regardless of what we are born with . Gender policing is very important to me as they go hand in hand with morals as a lady you can not walk around with no shirt but a man can and I feel that is 100% correct but majority of society would argue with me that we should be equal and I say women want to be so equal to men but if it came down to serving our country and them getting drafter majority of women would not agree with that. We socialized gender for years and now people are trying to work so hard unsocialize it and I feel they are fighting a fight that they don’t even fully understand. They want equal wages but there is some jobs that are better ran by a certain gender. This is when sexism comes into play and I feel that the “man up” as a man is fine some might say men need to cry or we put men into a society that they feel they have to act a certain way and I say yes we do just as we put women here to cater to be a mother a certain way. These are all powerful lessons because it shows the rules of gender in society we want a more less gender roles society its going to take a lot more than just toys being gender fluid we would have to break the pink and blue line and society is not really wanting that. We are socially stratified and unequal and I feel that it will continue to be like that considering how long we have already been like this.

04/14/20: Ezekiel, The Racist Mind

When it comes to racism many people do not like certain color skin tones and that is based on their outward appliance and also with stereotypes. Someone might say I don’t like white people because they are so rich and so republican. But In reality not all white people fit the description and that goes for any other race as well. We construct how exactly a certain race is being oblivious purposely and not taking into consideration anything else in that moment. I’ve known racist individuals and they are so closed minded they have a certain reason they don’t like a certain race and they only have some expeditions and that is usually if the person is a doctor or having an abundance of money . Many people do not even wanna hear you talk about your race if they already put you apart of a certain group for example we look at me and I say I am not white I am majority Mexican many people are like whatever if that’s what you want to say because they don’t even care nor take consideration into what I am saying. Society has also driven this whole racial divide because they always bring it up and it is true that many people are indeed in favor of other races over others. I agree with us needing to know ourselves and be conscious of our influences because we can not expect others to be aware of our race when we are not even fully aware.

04/14/20: Page, Showing my color

When it comes to skin tone color so many different things are expressed just by our skin tone on the outside. Growing up for me I can totally relate of feeling isolated into a certain race already I have always been so white on the outside so many people never looked at me as if I was Mexican. Everyone told me that I was able to have the white privilege because of my skin tone and I always told them I didn’t want that privilege I grew up very racially diverse so I never viewed me as wanting privileges just because of my color of skin tone. I never wanted to be separate because of my race but when I think back I usually always had Mexican friends but I never ever in my head thought that I was not racially diverse. This has to do a lot with how someone was raised in my opinion if they were growing up and was told to be someone who hung out with different races but some parents already instilled the racism in some kids head that was their way of thinking . I would have loved to be colorless but to me it selfish for me to say something like that considering the fact that many people feel way worse in their skin tone with the isolation especially with how society is set up. Race is so prominent in our life although we have came very far from the past. Ethnicities are of such a wide variety we need to just realize that different cultural being mixed are beautiful instead of always trying to hide our color we should just be focusing on embracing it.

04/14/20: Chapter 12: Music/Racism and Cultural Appropiation

Music with the mix of race is very very prominent among anyone who really listens to music. Society associates many music genres with a certain race and the couple of people who actually venture out to a different genre that is not typical to their skin tone usually is describes as being “that race at heart”. Music I feel is a very easy way into fitting in with a certain group for example I remember being in 7th grade and listening to the radio because back then the “aux” was not that common. I remember listening to music I had NO clue what they were talking about but because my older cousin would listen to it I started to because I wanted to fit in with her age I didn’t want to be the one listening to like little girl music. Music is also a way for many people to express themselves in a way of connecting to the world . For example I listened to this rapper named Mozzy from Sacramento he was heavily popular in my early high school years but I associated myself with his music so much because I felt as if his music was directed towards me. He spoke about his life struggles in a lyrical way that I was able to relate to my past but many people always was telling me I didn’t look like the type of girl to listen to him. As time went on people began to know that I listen to this type of music but many people thought it didn’t fit me because they didn’t realize I related to his lyrics I think they saw my skin tone and figured I’m so privileged I don’t even really know what struggling is which is false. The status that music puts people in is very different according to music genre, we think of country music and many people associate that with white people and it is a genre they can all exactly agree on. Cultural expression to me is by different types of genres and societies norm on exactly when to listen to a certain type of music like the saying goes “There’s a certain time and place for something.”

04/14/20: Chapter 6 Sports/Race

When it comes to sports there is much so a social construction especially in societies minds. We associate certain sports with certain kinds of people and then we make up our own explanation on why exactly that is just. For example when we think of basketball majority of us associate the “ideal” player being African American and tall. According to 1948 there was an all white basketball team which was the Boston Celtics this also had to due with the fact that their was racial inequality which means that their was. reasons there was no color on that team. When it comes to many sports there are a certain social capital associated with the sport so when we look at football in comparison to lacrosse we know that one is reasonably priced and the other will be extremely expensive . Comparing 1948 to 2020 we see how they bridged the social capital and are able to mix the two we look at basketball teams today and we realize that the teams are not racially mixed . This bridging can also of occurred because of the fans we see today with many teams fans they are culturally mixed although there is some type of construction in thinking like for example if someone is a Denver Bronco fan typically they are from Colorado but then there is me who is a team of the Broncos and was born and raised in California. Now there is so much diversity that even when we look at things such as the census we see that there are so many different types of a particular race someone associates themselves with. Now I feel like we have came so far from where we have been before although there is still racial division is sports especially with having the one up exactly as some races do because of how society sees a race and will associate it but at the end of the day we are extremely diverse. There is also many stepping stones when someone is in the sports popularity when we look at Michael Jordan his shoes are still in high demand of today and he is seen as an icon similar to Kobe Bryant.

04/05/20: Required Entry – Youtube Video

While watching the video I realized how much in similarity the question they asked Americans shared similarities like the question we did on the 3×5 card. It shows how most Americans know that of course the wealth system in the United States is totally uneven because we have majority of people in poor or middle class. But when I was to sit back and think I would have never thought that the data was that much different than what I originally had thought. We look at how Americans think it is set and yes of course the more wealthy still have more financial benefits than the rest but for them to take up majority of the graph is absolutely crazy. We do not even have that many people who are in the very top but for whatever reason they are the ones with majority of everything. On our zoom meeting we discussed about the tax breaks and how America was so great at one point and we look at that percentage which was 92% and that was when America was in it’s absolute prime and now we look at how the wealthiest contribute 20%. We see how big of a difference there is and yes we are aware that in reality Americans did not exactly pay out 92% because of course there is tax breaks and many other things but it is crazy to see how different the data is now. We have a president that says he will make America great again but in reality will he? 92% down to 20% the wealthiest are not going to be as willing as before, before they were building schools and roads because the United States was not already fully established but now have came a far way so now exactly what will happen. This YouTube video is from 2012 and we are in 2020 now, 8 years difference and the topic is still of relevance. Will America ever be Great again? Who knows with inequality like this.

03/26/20: Higley, The U.S upper class

The upper class in the United States is a social status is seen throughout different parts of the upper class persons life. When we look at their children you can see that the upper class have a one up . This is mixed with telling someone that if they work hard enough that they can make it to the top but when we look at examples of people that are high up their kids don’t have to work hard at all because they are already their at the top so that would mean that they are like their own separate society. When we look at Donald Trump for example he came from a wealthy family and therefore it made it easy for him to continue the wealthy legacy because technically he was already there but he worked hard to build his own but he already had the help from his father which is an advantage. His father also set it up for him to not have to be poor or in poverty but rather set him up to succeed and that is notable and usually this goes hand in hand with schooling. Upper class will go to the highest of the highest schools the ones that the name of them you know they are more able to succeed and that is of such importance. We look at the news when the higher class parents payed their way for their kids to get into a certain school and this is because of the social status that it holds especially with their economic status as well.

03/26/20: Morris & Grimes, Moving up …

When we think of moving up many people associate this with the American dream. America is full of opportunities which is 100% is but we have such a majority of poverty you would have to be working for it . We live by if you work hard enough you will make it to the top. I associate this with myself considering I do not come from the richest family or background but I tell myself if I work hard enough I will be at a higher level class than I came from. In reality the people who are working hard are striving to continue to work hard their whole life because they don’t exactly plan how to achieve their goals but rather get into huge amounts of debt and school loans. So many individuals skip the whole moving up process and think they can just go straight to being up. Many parents now decide to push their kids to be bigger than they were but doesn’t stress to them what comes along with that the moving up is a process. No matter how hard you work in some ways people will always have a one up with you but it all depends if the individual wants to fight the battle to make it to the top but that is up to the individual. The society we live In pushes you to see the ideal dream that majority of Americans want is to have all the designer and be more than just financially stable but they need to get all the inquiries on how to get there.

03/26/20: Gans, The uses of poverty

When we look at poverty many people get triggered by the though of people being poor and the poverty standpoint. Many people get frustrated by the though that when you say someone is poor majority of society assumes that it is there fault that they are poor that they are lazy so they are there due to their individual choices. The poverty is what drives majority of our economy the ones who have to work non stop. During this whole Coronavirus I can see that , grocery workers that get paid minimum wage are still out working with a little pay raise or none at all and they are at risk for this virus. When we think of someone poor it is more motivating for me someone who totally built themselves I would be more impressed rather than someone who was spoon fed their whole life and really do not know what it is to struggle. The in class demonstration helped me though realize that my judgments are not always right. When we did the step up or step back demonstration many people were way ahead of me but with some questions they stepped back that I assumed if they were that far ahead that they wouldn’t have to step back for anything but I was incorrect. Although many people think that poor really do not have anything to do with society or that they don’t work that hard they need to sit back and realize that majority of our daily lives we come into someone who is considered “In poverty, or poor” but from the outside you can not tell. A social class is not what defines a person but too many people In society do not realize that.

03/26/20: Chapter 4: Coffee/Class

When we think of the word coffee majority of Americans including myself connect the word to starbucks . Coffee is a drink that majority of Americans consume everyday , every morning and sometimes are die hard coffee drinkers and will drink coffee throughout the day as if it was water. I always knew that coffee and social class went together because like I’ve said before I’ve always known people knew something about you when they saw you have a green straw or just a different type of coffee in general. Society had a lot to do with this because of the simple fact that celebrities and just about everyone drank starbucks coffee or at least knew about it in one way or another which kind of made a group effect. This occurs with just about everything they show the example of a woman who drank coffee everyday but actually hated the taste of coffee and I think that is crazy but I know it happens to majority with us . For example me I hated the thought of coffee for the longest growing up I never understood why my grandma and tia had to drink coffee everyday because I thought it was so disgusting then once I got into college things changed I started trying iced coffees and not so much frappes and my life had changed I could now relate to coffee drinkers. I can totally understand how there is downsides but when I look back why 18 years later did I all of a sudden fall in love with coffee I would say its a society thing and also mentally because I crave coffee when I never have before but majority of the time I crave the sweetness not the actual coffee itself. I noticed this also related to class because I noticed rather than me making coffee at home I would plenty of times decide to go and stop and get coffee sometimes I even sat back and told myself if Im doing it just for the cup or something like that why don’t I just buy plastic cups and straws and then I would part of a group.
