02/06/19 Miner, Body Ritual Among the Nacirema

After reading the rituals of this group I was caught off guard with how weird that they have shrine boxes that have magical potions and that they actually believe that some of these things actually work and can keep them alive. With the potions they don’t know what is in them because only the people who are actually making the potions or speak this language can actually understand what is in the potion. I was absolutely disgusted when they said it was a ritual to put hog hairs in there mouth to me I couldn’t even imagine putting hog hairs into their mouth. When they said that intimacy depends on the lunars of the mood because they take potions to not have an offspring surprised me because usually groups of a far away place and society always have bunches of kids and not ever trying to control the amount of kids that they have. After discussing in class that nacriema is American spelled backwards shocked me but at the same time made some type of sense because when it described where this tribe was I was trying to think that they must of been close to us Americans so I was wondering why exactly I haven’t saw them. In class it made sense when he explained that the hog hairs are toothbrushes and that the intimacy is because so much of our population take birth control I put all the pieces together and it all began to make total sense, The potions was medicine and the language is only read by other doctors who actually understand this stuff.
